The Great Dragons

February 6 - April 13, 2007

In this afterschool program, children will be working on individual projects as well as a group project. We start by looking at various kinds of dragons and their mythology from around the world. The children will design their own dragons using various materials such as oil pastels, paper mache, paint, mixed media, and clay. They will learn different artistic techniques in the process. The second half of the course will focus on teamwork and the creation of a giant dragon (5-6 feet long) to be displayed in the school upon completion. Each class will decide as a group what the final dragon will look like, paying close attention to details and characteristics. It will be lots of fun, but BEWARE, we will get messy and creative along the way!

All About Me

April 4 - May 23, 2007

In this course, we will take some time to examine the various components that make up a child's personal world. This can range from the very tangible parts like a house/home, family, friends and school, to preferences like activities or foods, to inner goals and self-perception. Throughout history art has has been used as a tool for self-exploration. Using a variety of materials such as clay, paper mache, paints, pastels, mixed media and movement, the children will identify parts of their world and create artwork to reflect this. They will mold, sculpt, paint, cut and paste, build, jump, play, draw and have fun getting messy and creative in the process.
